This coming weekend (17 to 19 April) KIMEP hosts BarCamp Central Asia 2009, an "un-conference" for developing new media skills. Participants include professionals and amateurs, experts and newbies.

Weblog project assignment
Your final project is to produce a weblog on one or more topics of your choosing. The project will run from the week after the midterm break until the last day of the term, and students will be required to post a minimum of two substantive entries per week on the weblog.
I encourage students to form groups for their project weblogs. It's more fun and more inspiring to contribute to a weblog to which others also contribute. (We will learn to set up group weblogs in class.) However, for those who wish to do so, doing your weblog solo is also an option. read more »

What is journalism?
To begin our discussion of participatory journalism, please take 10 minutes at the beginning of class to write a brief entry (about two paragraphs) answering the question, "What is journalism?" In your response, you might consider things such as: why (or whether) journalism is important; how we rely on journalism (or not); who is a journalist, and why, and so on.
Submit your entry on your Wordpress weblog, and leave a link to your entry as a comment on this entry. (If you do not finish your entry in class, be sure to go back and finish it later.)

Participatory Journalism
Some important ideas from our "We Media" reading assignment: read more »
- Gatekeeper function of news media: When relatively few people have strong influence over what appears in media, it can provoke a concern that, as "gatekeepers" of information, they have too much social power.

For next week, please read chapters one ("Introduction to Participatory Journalism") and two ("Cultural Context: behind the explosion of participatory media")of "We Media: How Audiences are Shaping the Future of News and Information," available at the links above.

20 January: In class today
In class today we will:
- Check to see everyone is signed up for and can use the course website
- Introduce the major characteristics of new information technologies

NITs: Four Major Characteristics
New information technologies (NITs) are digital, networked, interactive, socio-technical systems for gathering, producing, and distributing meaning, ideas, and knowledge. (These last three words can be used to stand for information, a problematic term we will explore further.)
Think of technologies (which I have referred to above as systems) as a combination of tools (the things we use to influence the world) and the knowledge through which we create and use those tools. read more »

Hello from me
My name is Frederick and I am the instructor for the NITs course. I've lived in Almaty for more than two years and I like the snow here. (Before living here I lived in Canada. We had more snow there.)
I've been teaching about new technologies for a few years now, but even though I like being online, it's a love-hate relationship. It's great having access to the internet, using email, weblogs, and other sites. But sometimes I find the internet is just too demanding...
I'm looking forward to working with all of you and to learning some things from you as I share what I know with you.
